Description
The Deflection Tube is a specialised tool used to show how cathode rays are deflected in the presence of a magnet. This teaching tool provides an interesting approach to see and comprehend cathode ray behaviour and its relationship to magnetic fields.
The device has a horizontal tube filled with cathode rays. A fluorescent aluminium plate is placed within the tube, its cathode side having a slit and being bent at a right angle. Cathode rays create a vivid and brilliant shadow on the aluminium plate as they move through the slit. The arrangement is made much better by its capacity to demonstrate how a magnetic field affects cathode ray deflection.
The interaction between cathode rays and magnetic fields can be clearly seen when a magnet is brought close to the tube, causing the cathode rays to deflect dramatically. This device helps to clarify the fundamentals of magnetic deflection and advances knowledge of how charged particles behave in electromagnetic fields. It offers practical insights into the foundations of electromagnetic and is a useful teaching tool for physics and electronics education.
