Plano-concave cylindrical lenses have one flat (plano) surface and one inwardly curved concave surface along a single axis. These lenses are intended to spread or diverge light along the curved axis while having no effect along the perpendicular axis. They are frequently employed in optical systems for applications such as astigmatism correction, laser beam reshaping, and converting round beams to linear beams.

A plano-convex lens is one that has one flat (plano) surface and one that is bent outwardly (convex). It is thicker in the centre and thinnest at the edges.
